Drug Information: Atrovent inhaler

ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide), a bronchodilator is prescribed for the treatment of chronic bronchitis, emphysema, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and episodes of bronchospasm. ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) can prevent and relieve the conditions of acute asthma, shortness of breath with wheezing, rhinorrhoea and coughing. ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) belongs to muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist that blocks the binding of acetylcholine molecules in muscarinic receptors and hence prevents smooth muscle contraction including bronchial smooth muscles, alveoli and air way muscles. ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) is prescribed with salbutamol and nebulizers for fast relief of symptoms.

Who should not take ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide)?

ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) is contraindicated in the patients with blocks in gastrointestinal system, narrow angle glaucoma, weak immune system (immunocompromised host), paradoxical bronchospasm and problems in urination/urinary retention with or without urine infections. If you are allergic to Ipratropium and/or to atropine and its analogues, you should not use ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide). You should not use ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide), if you are taking drugs such as anti-cholinergic drugs, methylxanthines, tea, coffee, alcohol, other bronchodilators, oral or inhalation corticosteroid. If you are known allergic to ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) you must not take it without consulting the Physician. According to Food and Drug Association (FDA), ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) is classified as a Pregnancy Category – B drug and you should avoid ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) when you are pregnant, because it can harm the unborn foetus. If you are breast feeding your infant, you must consult your Physician before taking ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide).

ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) Side Effects:

The serious and the common side effects of the ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) are urinary retention, narrow angle glaucoma, skin rashes, edema in the face and extremities, paradoxical bronchospasm, stomatitis, blurred vision, increase heart beats, increased GI motility with diarrhoea, hypotension with palpitation, profuse sweating, corneal edema, pruritis, dry and painful eyes, sore and painful throat, taste changes and halo vision.

How should I take ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide)?

The recommended dosage for the ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) is two inhalations, four times, daily. ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) can be administered alone or along with the Corticosteroid inhalations or oral corticosteroids, that is used for the synergistic effect with the ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) to get the beneficial results in the breathing problems. The following instruction should be followed to take the ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) – four inhalations a day with ample hourly gaps: (1) Inhale ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything except plain water. 2) Take ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) while you are sitting or standing up. 3) Inhale ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) properly and hold the breath for at least 3 – 5 seconds. Do not inhale ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) before or after coffee, tea, juice, milk or other dairy drinks immediately, that can aggravate the symptoms. After inhaling ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) you must wait at least 2 - 5 minutes BEFORE: 1) lying down. You may sit, stand, or do normal activities like read the newspaper or take a walk. 2) Eating or drinking anything except plain water. Keep inhaling the inhaler of ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) for as long as your health care provider tells you to do so. To treat your asthma and Bronchitis or keep you from these symptoms, you have to take ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) as often and in the way ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) as prescribed.

What is the important information I should know about ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide)?

  • Inhale ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
  • Shake the inhaler well before use.
  • When using the first dose, press the canister twice to test the device and to remove the artefacts, if any.
  • It is important to rinse your mouth with water or brush your teeth after using ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide).
  • ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) inhaler medication comes with an actuation of 200 doses/puffs.
  • Do not use the ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) after 200 puffs of sprays.
  • ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) does not replace fast-acting inhalers for sudden onset of symptoms.
  • ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) may not be useful after the onset of the severe asthmatic problems. In this case, call your Physician right away.
  • Avoid spraying ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) in eyes.
  • ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) can be taken with or without food.
  • For ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) dosage one must follow his doctor's instructions.
  • It is important to take ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) regularly to get the most benefit, as directed by the Physician.
  • Do not use similar inhaling medications, with out Physician’s advice, while you use ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide).
  • Do not stop taking ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) without first talking to your doctor, even if you are feeling well. Even after your asthmatic symptoms improve, you may require continuous treatment for quite some time, as directed by the Physician.
  • If your problem exists or worsens, do not take excess ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) medication. Consult your Physician right away.
  • Store ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) as per the instructions on the label. Do not keep in the car or any hot place.
  • Do not try to reuse the canister. Discard the whole device safely after use.
  • Do not throw the device in a burning flame.
  • Keep ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) away from children and pets.

What happens if I miss a dose of ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide)?

Take the missed dose of ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) as soon as you remember, during the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed puff-dose and take ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) next day as routine dose. Do not take a double dose of the puff- medication.

What happens if I overdose of ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide)?

Since the inhalation is a limited medication, there is no chance for overdose unless, it is intentional. In case of ATROVENT INHALER (Ipratropium Bromide) overdose, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
