Drug Information: Avelox

AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL), an antibiotic is used to number of bacterial infections that includes bacillus anthacis infection, streptococcus and staphylococcus, Hemophillus influenza, enterobacter and klebsiella species. These organisms cause anthrax, community-acquired pneumonia, sinusitis, conjunctivitis, abdominal infection, eye infections, bronchitis and all types of skin infections. AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) belongs to Fluoroquinolone group of drugs and it is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits the bacterial DNA synthesis and replication. AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) should be used with extreme caution for a particular period and dose to prevent bacterial resistance. Some of the off-label uses of AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) are the treatment of tuberculosis, infective endocarditis and nosocomial pneumonia. However, these uses are not approved by Food and Drug Administration.

Who should not take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL)?

AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) is contraindicated in patients with pre-existing medical problems such as tendonitis, medical history of heart or kidney surgery or transplantation, systemic bacterial or fungal infections, clostrium-difficile associated diarrhoea, sun burns, prolonged QT intervals, peripheral neuropathy, jaundice, vasculitis, abnormally low blood counts, bleeding or clotting disorders, nephritis or nephrotic syndrome of any cause and viral infections. AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) may interact with drugs such as amitriptylline, erythromycin, anti-fungal agents, atenolol, antacids, iron and zinc supplements, aluminium, magnesium and calcium salts, cisplatin, methadone, steroids, all types of NSAIDs, probenecid, tramadol, rifampicin, warfarin, heparin, coumarin, live vaccines, theophylline and anti-arrthymic drugs including amiodarone and sotalol. You should not take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL), if you are allergic to any types of quinolone group of drugs or Moxifloxacin and its analogues. According to Food and Drug Administration, AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) is classified as a Pregnancy Category – C drug. AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation. AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) is contraindicated in children less than one year old.

AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) Side Effects:

AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) can cause arthralgia, myalgia, paced heart beats, liver enzyme anomalies, abdominal pain, palpitations, photophobia, vaginitis, QT prolongation, eosinophilia, insomnia, rashes, skin allergy, vertigo, tremor and malaise, sun burns after exposure to hot sun, photosensitivity and thrombocytopenia. Some of the rare adverse events of AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) are hyperlipidemia, cardiac pain, hepatic failures, tongue discoloration, syncope, tendonitis, ear ringing and torsade de pointes.

The daily recommended dosage for the AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) differs with each of the medical conditions. The daily recommended dose of AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) is 400 mg once daily and it may be required up to 21 days, depending on the infection. The following instruction should be followed to take the AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) – 400 mg (Daily): (1) You can take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) anytime disregard of food intake. 2) Take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) while you are sitting or standing up. 3) Take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) with 6 to 8 ounces (about 1 cup) of plain water. Do not take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) with any other drink besides plain water. Do not take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) with coffee, tea, juice, milk or other dairy drinks. 4) Swallow AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) on a whole. Do not chew the tablet or keep AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) in your mouth to melt or dissolve. After taking AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) you must wait at least 30 minutes BEFORE: 1) lying down. You may sit, stand, or do normal activities like read the newspaper or take a walk. 2) Eating or drinking anything except plain water.

Keep taking AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) for as long as your health care provider tells you. To treat your infections or to keep you away from these problems, you have to take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) as often and in the way AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) as prescribed.

What should I know before I take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL)?

  • Take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
  • If you experience gastritis or heart burn, do not take antacids. It may leads to drug-drug interactions.
  • Perform ECG, platelet count, bleeding and clotting tests, INR and serum electrolytes often while taking AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL).
  • AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) can be taken with or without food.
  • For AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) dosage one must follow his doctor's instructions.
  • If you have diarrhoea of any origin, you should not take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL).
  • It is important to take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) regularly to get the most benefits, as directed by the Physician.
  • Check your serum renal and hepatic profile tests regularly.
  • Do not stop taking AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) without first talking to your doctor, even if you are feeling well. Even after your symptoms improve, you may require continuous treatment for quite some time, as directed by the Physician.
  • Do not take OTC analgesics and pain-killers. It may leads to CNS depression, coma and death.
  • Store AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) as per the instructions on the label and keep away from children and pets.

What happens if I miss a dose of AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL)?

Take the missed dose of AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) as soon as you remember, during the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and take AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) next day as routine dose. Do not take a double dose of the medication.

What happens if I overdose of AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL)?

In case of AVELOX (Moxifloxacin HCL) overdose, try to seek emergency medical attention immediately.
