DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) belongs to NSAID group of drugs that is prescribed for the treatment of pain and/or inflammation of any cause. DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) is mostly used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, gout, inflamed tissue with marked swelling, pain with or with out fever. As like other NSAIDs, DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) inhibits prostaglandin metabolism by blocking the key precursor enzyme called cycloxygenase. Prostaglandin is the pain mediator that plays an important role in inflammation, fever and pain. DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) considerably decrease the synthesis of prostaglandin and alleviate the symptoms of inflammation.
Who should not take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin)?
DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) is contraindicated in patients with pre-existing medical conditions such as familial or personal history of heart attacks with or with out hypertension, congestive heart failures, coronary artery by-pass surgery, bleeding or clotting disorders, decreased platelet counts, SLE, lupus antibodies, stroke, epilepsy, breathing problems including asthma and rhinitis, GI bleeding with ulcer or perforation, chest pain, heart burns, vision problems and abnormal speech pathology. You should not take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin), if you are taking drugs such as warfarin, heparin, coumarin, lithium, methotrexate, steroidal medications, immunosuppressant drugs, NSAIDs including Aspirin, gentamicin, aminoglycosides and all types of anti-depressant drugs. According to Food and Drug Administration, DAY PRO (Oxaprozin) is classified as Pregnancy category – C drug and it can pass through breast milk. DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) is contraindicated in pregnancy, lactation and in children less than 6 years old.
DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) Side Effects:
DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) can cause shortness of breath, dizziness, nasal discharge, blood vomit, jaundice like symptoms, peptic ulcer, perforation, GI bleeding characterized by black or tan or charry stools, heart burns, dry mouth, stomach pain or irritation, dysphagia, easy bruising, prolonged bleeding, decreased platelet count, platelet aggregation, diarrhoea or constipation, fever with sore throat, headache or vertigo like symptoms, tinnitus, abnormal skin rashes that worsens after exposure to sun, sun burns, numbness, muscle tingling, stomach upset and flu like symptoms. Rarely, serious skin reactions or anaphylactic reactions may occur and it is extremely uncommon.
How should I take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin)?
The daily recommended dosage for the DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) differs with each of the medical conditions. The daily recommended dose of DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) is 600 – 1200 mg/day in divided doses. But the maximum dose of DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) should not exceed more than 1800 mg/day. The following instruction should be followed to take the DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) 600-1200 mg (Daily): (1) You can take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) preferably after your meals to reduce the incidence of gastritis and peptic ulcer 2) Take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) while you are sitting or standing up. 3) Take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) with 6 to 8 ounces (about 1 cup) of plain water. Do not take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) with any other drink besides plain water. Do not take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) with coffee, tea, juice, milk or other dairy drinks. 4) Swallow DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) on a whole. Do not chew the tablet or keep DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) in your mouth to melt or dissolve. After taking DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) you must wait at least 30 minutes BEFORE: 1) lying down. You may sit, stand, or do normal activities like read the newspaper or take a walk. 2) Eating or drinking anything except plain water.
Keep taking DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) for as long as your health care provider tells you. To treat your pain or to keep you away from these problems, you have to take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) as often and in the way DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) as prescribed.
What should I know before I take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin)?
- Take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
- Take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) preferably after food intake.
- For DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) dosage one must follow his doctor's instructions.
- Do not smoke or consume alcohol while you are taking DAYPRO (Oxaprozin).
- It is important to take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) regularly to get the most benefit, as directed by the Physician.
- Check your platelet count, bleeding time, clotting time and INR values regularly.
- Avoid exposure to hot sun or heat environments.
- Do not stop taking DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) without first talking to your doctor, even if you are feeling well. Even after your symptoms improve, you may require continuous treatment for quite some time, as directed by the Physician.
- If you experience abnormal upper abdominal pain, burns, gastritis before and after food intake, stop taking DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) and inform your Physician about your problem.
- Check your lithium levels, urine and faecal occult blood regularly while you are taking DAYPRO (Oxaprozin).
- Do not take OTC medications including analgesics or herbal/vitamin supplements. Some of them may increase or decrease DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) liver metabolism.
- Store DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) as per the instructions on the label and keep away from children and pets.
What happens if I miss a dose of DAYPRO (Oxaprozin)?
Take the missed dose of DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) as soon as you remember, during the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and take DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) next day as routine dose. Do not take a double dose of the medication.
What happens if I overdose of DAYPRO (Oxaprozin)?
Abnormal blood vomiting, changes in breathing, GI pain or irritation, dizziness with profuse sweating, internal bruising and prolonged bleeding are some of the symptoms of DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) overdose. In case of DAYPRO (Oxaprozin) overdose, try to seek emergency medical attention immediately.
