Drug Information: Feldene

FELDENE (Piroxicam) is a non-selective cyclooxygenase inhibitor and it is classified as NSAID. FELDENE (Piroxicam) is prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. FELDENE (Piroxicam) inhibits the synthesis of arachidonic acid metabolites which are the inflammatory mediators and thus prevents the inflammation reactions. FELDENE (Piroxicam) is also prescribed in women with primary dysmenorrhoea and post-surgical pain. FELDENE (Piroxicam) is a potent anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-pyretic (fever reducing) drug.

Who should not take FELDENE (Piroxicam)?

FELDENE (Piroxicam) is contraindicated in the patients with bleeding disorders, gastric or duodenal ulcers, clotting disorders, medical or family history of heart attack, stroke, myocardial infarction, liver or kidney diseases, edema with salt imbalance, circulatory failure, asthma, drug sensitivity to NSAIDs and piroxicam. FELDENE (Piroxicam) is contraindicated in the last trimester of the pregnancy and FELDENE (Piroxicam) can pass through the breast milk and affect your nursing infant. If you are a lactating mother, you should not take FELDENE (Piroxicam). You should not take FELDENE (Piroxicam) if you are taking medicines such as diuretics, any types of ACE inhibitors, anti-allergic drugs, sedatives, anti-depressants, NSAIDs, lithium, alcohol, methotrexate, warfarin, corticosteroids, heparin/coumarin and aspirin.

FELDENE (Piroxicam) Side Effects:

Some of the adverse events that are reported with FELDENE (Piroxicam) are: fever, rashes, pruritis, vision changes, increase in serum potassium levels, GI disturbances with upper or lower intestinal bleeding and/or ulcerations, black or red coloured stools, blood vomit, purpura, problems in urination, bruising, infections, abnormal edema with electrolytic imbalance, heart burns with gastritis, nasal polyps, ringing of ears, bloating, kidney damage, intense itching, weight changes, muscle weakness, lupus like symptoms, hearing problems, weight gain problems, lack or coordination, pancreatic and liver problems and decrease in the blood cells. Rarely, serious and life threatening allergic complications are reported in some patients.

How should I take FELDENE (Piroxicam)?

The recommended dosage for the FELDENE (Piroxicam) is 20 mg daily. FELDENE (Piroxicam) can be administered alone or along with corticosteroids for the medical management of pain. The following instruction should be followed to take the FELDENE (Piroxicam) – 20 mg (Daily): (1) Take FELDENE (Piroxicam) only after your meals with plenty of water 2) Take FELDENE (Piroxicam) while you are sitting or standing up. 3) Take FELDENE (Piroxicam) with 6 to 8 ounces (about 1 cup) of plain water. Do not take FELDENE (Piroxicam) with any other drink besides plain water. Do not take FELDENE (Piroxicam) with coffee, tea, juice, milk or other dairy drinks. 4) Swallow FELDENE (Piroxicam) on a whole. Do not chew the tablet or keep FELDENE (Piroxicam) in your mouth to melt or dissolve. After taking FELDENE (Piroxicam) you must wait at least 30 minutes BEFORE: 1) lying down. You may sit, stand, or do normal activities like read the newspaper or take a walk. 2) Eating or drinking anything except plain water.

Keep taking FELDENE (Piroxicam) for as long as your health care provider tells you. For FELDENE (Piroxicam) to treat your pain or keep you away from getting the symptoms, you have to take FELDENE (Piroxicam) as often and in the way FELDENE (Piroxicam) as prescribed.

What should I know about FELDENE (Piroxicam)?

  • Take FELDENE (Piroxicam) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
  • You must take FELDENE (Piroxicam) only after your food intake.
  • Avoid coffee, tea and cocoa beverages while you take FELDENE (Piroxicam).
  • For FELDENE (Piroxicam) dosage one must follow his doctor's instructions.
  • It is important to take FELDENE (Piroxicam) regularly to get the most benefit, as directed by the Physician.
  • Avoid direct sunlight to prevent skin bruising or reddening.
  • You should avoid smoking and alcohol habits while you take FELDENE (Piroxicam).
  • You should not take FELDENE (Piroxicam) for a prolonged period unless otherwise directed by a Physician.
  • If you are allergic to NSAIDs and aspirin, you should consult your Physician before taking FELDENE (Piroxicam).
  • Do not stop taking FELDENE (Piroxicam) without first talking to your doctor, even if you are feeling well. Even after your symptoms improve, you may require continuous treatment for quite some time, as directed by the Physician.
  • Store FELDENE (Piroxicam) as per the instructions on the label.

What happens if I miss a dose of FELDENE (Piroxicam)?

Take the missed dose of FELDENE (Piroxicam) as soon as you remember, during the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and take FELDENE (Piroxicam) next day as routine dose. Do not take a double dose of the medication.

What happens if I overdose of FELDENE (Piroxicam)?

If you experience gastric pain, bleeding, bruising, vomiting, red or black colour stools and abnormal breathing, it may be a symptom of FELDENE (Piroxicam) overdose. In this case, try to seek emergency medical attention immediately.
