INDERAL LA (Propranolol) is a long-acting synthetic beta-adregenic receptor antagonist that is prescribed for the treatment of hypertension, migraine attacks, depression with panic attacks, aggressive behaviours caused by brain injuries, hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, angina pectoris in coronary atherosclerosis, essential tremors, irregular heart beats and tremors. INDERAL LA (Propranolol) blocks the adregenic receptors and prevents the binding of adrenaline and noradrenalin. Some of the off-label uses of INDERAL LA (Propranolol) are prevention of cluster headaches, stage fears, tension induced headaches and reduction of portal hypertension. However, these medical benefits are not approved by Food and Drug Administration.
Who should not take INDERAL LA (Propranolol)?
INDERAL LA (Propranolol) is contraindicated in patients with pre-existing medical conditions such as myasthenia gravis, severe diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, hypotension, decreased heart beats and heart blocks. According to Food and Drug Administration, INDERAL LA (Propranolol) is classified as a Pregnancy category – C drug and you should not take INDERAL LA (Propranolol), if you are a pregnant or lactating mother. If you are taking drugs such as quinindine, calcium channel blockers including verapamil, clonidine, rifampicin, digoxin, cimetidine, phenobarbitol and NSAIDS, you should not take INDERAL LA (Propranolol).
INDERAL LA (Propranolol) Side Effects:
INDERAL LA (Propranolol) can dangerously reduce the pace of heart beats and it can aggravate the angina and increase the incidence of heart failures and hence INDERAL LA (Propranolol) should be used with extreme caution. Some of the other side effects of INDERAL LA (Propranolol) are bronchitis, emphysema, throat infections, diarrhoea, low BP, alterations in sleep patterns, constipation, low body temperatures with fever and chills, dizziness and even impotence in males. If you are allergic to INDERAL LA (Propranolol), you should gradually decrease the dose and then stop the medication to prevent the withdrawal syndrome.
How should I take INDERAL LA (Propranolol)?
The recommended dosage for the INDERAL LA (Propranolol) for hypertension and migraine is 80 - 240 mg twice daily and the usual dose of INDERAL LA (Propranolol) for the treatment of chest pain and psychotic treatments are 80 – 360 mg, daily. In the management of stress and stage frights, a low dose of 10-30 mg may be useful. INDERAL LA (Propranolol) can be administered alone or along with medications according to the requirement. A daily dose of INDERAL LA (Propranolol) should not exceed 640 mg. The following instruction should be followed to take the INDERAL LA (Propranolol): (1) Take INDERAL LA (Propranolol) before your meals, preferably half-an-hour before food intake. 2) Take INDERAL LA (Propranolol) while you are sitting or standing up. 3) Take INDERAL LA (Propranolol) with 6 to 8 ounces (about 1 cup) of plain water. Do not take INDERAL LA (Propranolol) with any other drink besides plain water. Do not take INDERAL LA (Propranolol) with coffee, tea, juice, milk or other dairy drinks. 4) Swallow INDERAL LA (Propranolol) on a whole. Do not chew the tablet or keep INDERAL LA (Propranolol) in your mouth to melt or dissolve. After taking INDERAL LA (Propranolol) you must wait at least 30 minutes BEFORE: 1) lying down. You may sit, stand, or do normal activities like read the newspaper or take a walk. 2) Eating or drinking anything except plain water.
What should I know about INDERAL LA (Propranolol)?
- Take INDERAL LA (Propranolol) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
- You should take INDERAL LA (Propranolol) preferably before your food.
- For INDERAL LA (Propranolol) dosage one must follow his doctor's instructions.
- Check your Blood pressure often.
- Please avoid using INDERAL LA (Propranolol), unless prescribed by a Physician.
- It is important to take INDERAL LA (Propranolol) regularly to get the most benefit, as directed by the Physician.
- It may take two or more weeks to feel the benefits of INDERAL LA (Propranolol) in most of the cases.
- If you feel your symptoms get worsen even after you took INDERAL LA (Propranolol), you should inform your Physician right away.
- Do not stop taking INDERAL LA (Propranolol) without first talking to your doctor, even if you are feeling well. Even after your symptoms improve, you may require continuous treatment for quite some time, as directed by the Physician.
- Store INDERAL LA (Propranolol) as per the instructions on the label.
What happens if I miss a dose of INDERAL LA (Propranolol)?
Take the missed dose of INDERAL LA (Propranolol) as soon as you remember, during the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and take INDERAL LA (Propranolol) next day as routine dose. Do not take a double dose of the medication.
What happens if I overdose of INDERAL LA (Propranolol)?
If you experience vomiting, nausea, dizziness, excess sweating with numbness in one side of the body and chest pain, it may be symptom of INDERAL LA (Propranolol) overdose. In this case, try to seek emergency medical attention immediately.
