Drug Information: Naprosyn EC

NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen), a NSAID group of drug that is prescribed to treat and alleviate the symptoms of pain, inflammation and fever. NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) is usually prescribed to reduce the inflammation in Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, bursitis, intermittent grade fever, spondylitis, dysmenorrhoea, myalgia, tendonitis and acute migraine attacks. As like other NSAIDs, NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) can block the cycloxygenase enzyme and inhibit the prostaglandin biosynthesis. Prostaglandin is the pain mediator in the pathophysiological process and inhibition of prostaglandin may relieve the pain and inflammation.

Who should not take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen)?

NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) is contraindicated in patients with pre-existing medical conditions such as gastritis, asthma, perennial rhinitis, peptic ulcerations with or without bleeding, heart problems, previous history or family history of heart attacks, nasal polyps, stroke, bleeding and clotting disorders, weight gain problems, liver and kidney disorders, recent coronary artery by-pass surgery, chest pain with abnormal breathings and anemia, you should not take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen). If you are allergic to any of the NSAIDs, you should not take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen). If you are taking drugs such as alcohol, lithium and any other NSAIDs including aspirin, you should not take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen). If you are pregnant woman or nursing mother, you should not take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen). According to Food and Drug Administration, NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) is a pregnancy category – C drug and it can harm the foetus and also the feeding infant. Do not give NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) to children less than 2 years old.

NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) Side Effects:

NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) can cause gastric irritation, platelet aggregation, prolonged bleeding, clotting problems, heart attacks, myocardial infarction, stroke like events, black or brown or tan coloured stools or vomiting, peptic ulcerations, skin allergy, photosensitivity, sun burns, GI bleeding, abdominal distension with bloating, fainting, vision changes, nasal bleeding, nasal polyps, bruising, ear ringing, sore throat and jaundice like symptoms.

How should I take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen)?

The daily recommended dosage for the NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) differs with each of the medical conditions. The daily recommended dose of NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) is 375 mg. The following instruction should be followed to take the NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) – 375 mg (Daily): (1) You can take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) preferably after the food intake to reduce the incidence of gastritis and peptic ulcers. 2) Take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) while you are sitting or standing up. 3) Take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) with 6 to 8 ounces (about 1 cup) of plain water. Do not take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) with any other drink besides plain water. Do not take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) with coffee, tea, juice, milk or other dairy drinks. 4) Swallow NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) on a whole. Do not chew the tablet or keep NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) in your mouth to melt or dissolve. After taking NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) you must wait at least 30 minutes BEFORE: 1) lying down. You may sit, stand, or do normal activities like read the newspaper or take a walk. 2) Eating or drinking anything except plain water.

Keep taking NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) for as long as your health care provider tells you. To treat your pain or to keep you away from these problems, you have to take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) as often and in the way NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) as prescribed. What should I know before I take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen)?

  • Take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
  • Do not take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) for prolong period.
  • You can take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) preferably after the food intake.
  • For NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) dosage one must follow his doctor's instructions.
  • Check your serum electrolytes including lithium regularly.
  • Check your bleeding time, clotting time, platelet counts and INR values regularly, while you are taking NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen).
  • It is important to take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) regularly to get the most benefit, as directed by the Physician.
  • Perform urine routine and stool analysis regularly to detect occult blood.
  • Do not stop taking NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) without first talking to your doctor, even if you are feeling well. Even after your symptoms improve, you may require continuous treatment for quite some time, as directed by the Physician.
  • Do not consume alcohol and refrain from smoking habits while you are taking NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen).
  • Avoid direct sunlight and hot climates.
  • Do not take OTC drugs including aspirin and other NSAIDs while taking NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen).
  • Store NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) as per the instructions on the label and keep away from children and pets.

What happens if I miss a dose of NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen)?

Take the missed dose of NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) as soon as you remember, during the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and take NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) next day as routine dose. Do not take a double dose of the medication.

What happens if I overdose of NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen)?

Overdose of NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) can cause GI bleeding, blood vomit, fainting, gastritis and even coma. In case of NAPROSYN EC (Naproxen) overdose, try to seek emergency medical attention immediately.
