PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) is a psychotropic/anti-depressant drug that is called as SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) is prescribed to treat major depressive disorders, panic disorders, social anxiety disorders, premenstrual dysphoric disorder. PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) selectively prevent the uptake of unbalanced serotonin by the brain nerve cells that cause the psychiatric disorders. You should take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) only under medical supervision and self-medication is highly dangerous.
Who should not take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride)?
You should not take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride), if you have pre-existing medical problems like liver and/or kidney problems, narrow-angle glaucoma, maniac depression/bipolar disorders with suicidal thoughts, abnormal mood swing problems with self hurting or aggressive behaviour, bleeding and clotting disorders and convulsive disorders. You should not take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride), if you are taking drugs such as tramadol, isocarboxacid, thioridazine, cimetidine, MAO inhibitors, warfarin/coumarin, furazolidone, lithium, anti-arrthymic drugs, some anti-viral drugs, haloperidol, tryptophan, aminophylline and theophylline and alcohol. PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) is a pregnancy Category – D drug and it can harm the unborn foetus and it can pass the breast milk and affect the infant. If you are a pregnant or breastfeeding mother, you should not take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride). If you are under 24 years old, you should consult your Physician before taking PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride). You may need an adjusted dose or continuous medical monitoring.
PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) Side Effects:
PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) can cause series of side effects such as, somnolence, nausea, asthenia, dizziness, GI disturbances with constipation or diarrhoea, dizziness, impaired judgement, lack of coordination, tremor, loss of appetite, increased sweating, flatulence, dry mouth, gastritis, agitation with suicidal thoughts, bronchitis with flu like symptoms, vision problems, restlessness, impotence, loss of libido, ejaculation problems, unusual bone tenderness with extreme pain, bleeding or bruising, self-hurting behaviour, edema in the extremities, eyelids and lips, paraesthesia and drug allergy. Many side effects and its symptoms may vary from person to person.
How should I take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride)?
The recommended dosage for the PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) varies with each of the medical conditions. PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) can be administered as monotherapy or as a concomitant therapy. In adult depression and anxiety, the dose of PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) is 20mg, once daily. In the treatment of panic disorder, the initial dose is 10mg which can be increased 40mg in accordance with the patient’s need. For the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, the initial dosage is 12.5 mg and the maintenance dose is 25 mg. For all the treatments, PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) should be withdrawn gradually. The following instruction should be followed to take the PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride): (1) Take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything except plain water. 2) Take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) while you are sitting or standing up. 3) Take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) with 6 to 8 ounces (about 1 cup) of plain water. Do not take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) with any other drink besides plain water. Do not take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) with coffee, tea, juice, milk or other dairy drinks. 4) Swallow PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) on a whole. Do not chew the tablet or keep PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) in your mouth to melt or dissolve. After taking PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) you must wait at least 30 minutes BEFORE: 1) lying down. You may sit, stand, or do normal activities like read the newspaper or take a walk. 2) Eating or drinking anything except plain water.
Keep taking PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) for as long as your health care provider tells you. For PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) to treat your problems or keep you away from getting the symptoms, you have to take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) as often and in the way PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) as prescribed.
What should I know about PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride)?
- Take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
- PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) can be taken with or without food.
- For PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) dosage one must follow his doctor's instructions.
- It is important to take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) regularly to get the most benefit, as directed by the Physician.
- Avoid alcohol and/or smoking habits while you take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride). PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) can impair your mental cognition and judgement. Avoid driving vehicles and handling hazardous industrial machineries that needs extreme attention.
- If you experience abnormal suicidal thoughts or if your age is less than 24 years, you should consult your doctor.
- Don’t stop PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) suddenly. It may cause withdrawal syndrome. Try to stop it gradually.
- If you feel your symptoms getting worse even after your PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) treatment, you should consult your doctor immediately.
- You should not take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride), 14 days before and after you took MAO inhibitors.
- Do not stop taking PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) without first talking to your doctor, even if you are feeling well. Even after your symptoms improve, you may require continuous treatment for quite some time, as directed by the Physician.
- If any of your friends or relatives complains your unusual psychological or psychiatric behaviour, try to inform your doctor right away.
- Store PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) as per the instructions on the label.
What happens if I miss a dose of PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride)?
Take the missed dose of PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) as soon as you remember, during the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and take PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) next day as routine dose. Do not take a double dose of the medication.
What happens if I overdose of PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride)?
Overdose of PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride) can cause dizziness, drowsiness, fainting, aggression, vision changes, paced heart beats, convulsions and even coma/death. If you experience any of these symptoms after you took PAXIL (Paroxetine Hydrochloride), try to seek emergency medical attention immediately.
