Drug Information: Sinequan

SINEQUAN (Doxepin), a tri-cyclic anti-depressant that is prescribed to treat depression associated with bipolar disorders, anxiety disorders, alcohol abuse habits, depressive-maniac like behavioural problems, fear with stress, tension with unknown causes, Obsessive-compulsive disorders and stress. SINEQUAN (Doxepin) belongs to psychotropic or mood-elevator drugs that can stabilize the brain neurotransmitters and also hence the psychological behaviour including mood. SINEQUAN (Doxepin) is prescribed in the treatment of sleep disorders and skin rashes of unknown underlying reasons.

Who should not take SINEQUAN (Doxepin)?

You should not take SINEQUAN (Doxepin), if you have problems such as trachoma, muscular pain, urinating problems, suicidal thoughts, metabolic disorders such as diabetes, pituitary gland anomalies, bleeding and clotting disorders; aggression related maniac depression, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnoea and postural hypotension. If you are taking medicines such as cimetidine, any MAO inhibitors, thiazide like diuretics, anti-emetics such as prochlorperazine, promethazine, tolazamide, warfarin, quinidine and tranylcypromine. These drugs may cause serious and life-threatening events that may be fatal in most of the cases. Avoid taking SINEQUAN (Doxepin), 14 days before and after taking MAO inhibitor drugs to prevent any complications by drug interactions. According to Food and Drug Administration, SINEQUAN (Doxepin) is classified as a Pregnancy category – C drug and it can harm the foetus. You should avoid taking SINEQUAN (Doxepin), if you are pregnant or a nursing mother. If you are allergic to SINEQUAN (Doxepin), you should inform your Physician.

SINEQUAN (Doxepin) Side Effects:

SINEQUAN (Doxepin) can cause side effects including nausea, fainting, confusion, hallucination, delirium, profuse sweating, uneven heart beats, suicidal thoughts, self-hurting behaviour, sleeplessness, urinating problems, restless leg syndrome, neurological pain, tremors, thirst, bleeding disorders, weight gain, skin rashes, dizziness, blurred vision, ear ringing, tingling, sexual impairment, endocrinological disorders, psychological behaviour, tremors, bruising, pain in the extremities that spreads to the jaw, chest and other parts. Some of the other/rare side effects may differ from one person to another.

How should I take SINEQUAN (Doxepin)?

The daily recommended dosage for the SINEQUAN (Doxepin) differs with each of the medical conditions. Generally, the daily recommended dose of SINEQUAN (Doxepin) is 75 – 300 mg, in divided doses. But in the maintenance dose, 150 mg/day is optimal and the treatment should be started with a low dose of SINEQUAN (Doxepin). The following instruction should be followed to take the SINEQUAN (Doxepin) – 75 - 300 mg (Daily): (1) You can take SINEQUAN (Doxepin) anytime disregard of food intake. 2) Take SINEQUAN (Doxepin) while you are sitting or standing up. 3) Take SINEQUAN (Doxepin) with 6 to 8 ounces (about 1 cup) of plain water. Do not take SINEQUAN (Doxepin) with any other drink besides plain water. Do not take SINEQUAN (Doxepin) with coffee, tea, juice, milk or other dairy drinks. 4) Swallow SINEQUAN (Doxepin) on a whole. Do not chew the tablet or keep SINEQUAN (Doxepin) in your mouth to melt or dissolve. After taking SINEQUAN (Doxepin) you must wait at least 30 minutes BEFORE: 1) lying down. You may sit, stand, or do normal activities like read the newspaper or take a walk. 2) Eating or drinking anything except plain water.

Keep taking SINEQUAN (Doxepin) for as long as your health care provider tells you. To treat your psychiatric/medical problems or to keep you away from these problems, you have to take SINEQUAN (Doxepin) as often and in the way SINEQUAN (Doxepin) as prescribed.

What should I know before I take SINEQUAN (Doxepin)?

  • Take SINEQUAN (Doxepin) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
  • SINEQUAN (Doxepin) can be taken with or without food.
  • If you feel abnormal suicidal thoughts or psychological behaviour, stop taking SINEQUAN (Doxepin) and inform your doctor immediately.
  • For SINEQUAN (Doxepin) dosage one must follow his doctor's instructions.
  • It is important to take SINEQUAN (Doxepin) regularly to get the most benefit, as directed by the Physician.
  • Avoid taking SINEQUAN (Doxepin), fourteen days before and after taking Mono-Amine Oxidase inhibitor drugs.
  • As like other anti-depressants, you need to wait for at least 4 weeks to feel the beneficial effects of SINEQUAN (Doxepin).
  • Do not self-medicate over-the-counter drugs while you take SINEQUAN (Doxepin).
  • SINEQUAN (Doxepin) may impair your thinking and cognitive functions. Do not drive vehicles or handle industrial/hazardous machineries that needs extreme attention.
  • Do not stop taking SINEQUAN (Doxepin) without first talking to your doctor, even if you are feeling well. Even after your symptoms improve, you may require continuous treatment for quite some time, as directed by the Physician.
  • Store SINEQUAN (Doxepin) as per the instructions on the label and keep away from children and pets.

What happens if I miss a dose of SINEQUAN (Doxepin)?

Take the missed dose of SINEQUAN (Doxepin) as soon as you remember, during the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and take SINEQUAN (Doxepin) next day as routine dose. Do not take a double dose of the medication.

What happens if I overdose of SINEQUAN (Doxepin)?

If you experience abnormal suicidal thoughts or paced/uneven heart beats, nausea and vomiting, numbness and fainting, it may be a symptom of SINEQUAN (Doxepin) overdose. In case of SINEQUAN (Doxepin) overdose, try to seek emergency medical attention immediately.
