Drug Information: Ultram

ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl), a centrally-acting opioid analgesic is prescribed to treat the moderate to severe pain of any underlying pathology. ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) is commonly prescribed in abdominal pain in pancreatitis, cirrhosis, fibromyalgia and neurological problems like restless leg syndrome and its associated problems. ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) is contraindicated in children.

Who should not take ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl)?

If you are taking drugs such as lithium, carbamazepine, valproate, MAO inhibitors, centrally acting sedatives, anti-histaminics, muscle-relaxants, anti-depressants, anxiolytics, antibiotics such as erythromycin, rifampicin, clarithromycin etc, sumatriptan, ACE inhibitors, Anti-HIV drugs and immunosuppressant drugs. If you an alcoholic or chain smoker, you should not take ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl). ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) is contraindicated in the patients with liver or kidney diseases, any types of seizures, medical history of head injury, all types of mental illness, addiction problems and metabolic disorders. ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) is classified as a pregnancy category – C drug and the safety of ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) in pregnancy and breastfeeding is still unknown. You can consult your Physician before taking ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl), if you are a nursing mother or pregnant woman.

ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) Side Effects:

ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) can cause decreased or subtle breathing, seizures, anxiety, agitation, psychotic depression, maniac reactions, hallucinations, nausea, vomiting, lack of coordination, constipation or loose stools with GI upset and drowsiness. In some patients, ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) can cause allergic reactions with edema in soft tissues, swollen eyelids and lips and tongue.

How should I take ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl)?

The recommended dosage for the ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) is 50 mg daily in divided doses. In some cases, the patient may need 100 mg/day in 4 divided doses. The following instruction should be followed to take the ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) – 50 mg (Daily): (1) Take ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything except plain water. 2) Take ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) while you are sitting or standing up. 3) Take ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) with 6 to 8 ounces (about 1 cup) of plain water. Do not take ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) with any other drink besides plain water. Do not take ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) with coffee, tea, juice, milk or other dairy drinks. 4) Swallow ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) on a whole. Do not chew the tablet or keep ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) in your mouth to melt or dissolve. After taking ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) you must wait at least 30 minutes BEFORE: 1) lying down. You may sit, stand, or do normal activities like read the newspaper or take a walk. 2) Eating or drinking anything except plain water.

What should I know about ULTRAM (Tramadol)?

  • Take ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol while you take ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl).
  • If you experience abnormal behaviours and suicidal thoughts, you must stop taking ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) immediately.
  • ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) can be taken with or without food.
  • For ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) dosage one must follow his doctor's instructions.
  • It is important to take ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) regularly to get the most benefit, as directed by the Physician.
  • ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) can cause dizziness or impaired judgement. Avoid driving vehicles or handling hazardous machineries after took ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl).
  • Do not stop taking ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) without first talking to your doctor, even if you are feeling well. Even after your symptoms improve, you may require continuous treatment for quite some time, as directed by the Physician.
  • Store ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) as per the instructions on the label.

What happens if I miss a dose of ULTRAM (Tramadol)?

Take the missed dose of ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) as soon as you remember, during the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and take ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) next day as routine dose. Do not take a double dose of the medication.

What happens if I overdose of ULTRAM (Tramadol)?

If you experience drowsiness, seizures, low temperatures, fainting, problems in breathing and vision changes, it may be a symptom of ULTRAM (Tramadol Hcl) overdose. Please try to get emergency medical attention immediately.
